Alright, I'm writing a term paper for my Folklore class and could use some help. Basically, I'm writing about urban legends (you know, things like the Vanishing Hitchhiker, the Jersey Devil, NYC sewer alligators, Bloody Mary, etc), but in video games. Specifically, what certain well-known video game urban legends are and how they've evolved because of the Internet.
So what I need from you all are examples of these legends, things you've "heard from a friend of a friend of your guildie's old class officer" sort of thing, or even the most famous ones that everyone's heard of and that have become a running gag. Things like the Metroid "Justin Bailey" code, the volcano in Battlezone, even the "Cow Level". Offline and online games are equally fair game. |

(Click here to post your own answers for this meme.)
| × I miss somebody right now. (Not at the moment, as I haven't left her for home yet) |
✓ I don't watch much TV these days. (I used to watch more, but almost all my time is taken up by reading and gaming now, which is as it should be) |
✓ I own lots of books. (......Right. Moving on. :) |
| ✓ I wear glasses or contact lenses. (Since 3rd grade, when I realized I could no longer see the board from the first row of desks.) |
✓ I love to play video games. (Again. Moving on. :) |
× I've tried marijuana. |
| ✓ I've watched porn movies. (Entirely not worth it. The acting makes my brainmeats hurt.) |
× I have been the psycho-ex in a past relationship. |
× I believe honesty is usually the best policy. (Ends justify the means. And if they don't, you're not trying hard enough.) |
| ✓ I curse sometimes. (Bad habit, yes, but it was repressed so much it's just been striking back the last few years.) |
× I have changed a lot mentally over the last year. |
× I carry my knife/razor everywhere with me. (I hurt myself enough just walking around randomly; a sharp, pointy thing would not be much help.) |
( it goes on... ) |

Ok, I figured this was more than sufficient cause to break my several month LJ absence:
"Hasselhoff Rushed Into Surgery After His Head Hits Chandelier In Freak Gym Shower Shaving Accident".
Former "Baywatch" star David Hasselhoff had surgery after severing a tendon in his right arm in an accident in a London gym bathroom, his spokeswoman said Friday. The 53-year-old actor, who played lifeguard Mitch Buchannon on the TV beach drama for 11 years, was shaving at a gym in the Sanderson Hotel on Thursday when he hit his head on a chandelier, showering his arm with broken glass, his publicist, Judy Katz, said.
...I'm not sure what's funnier: that this happened, that it happened to David Hasselhoff, or that it somehow -didn't- happen to me, because that totally sounds like something that would.
---
Also, reason for my long drought between posts: WoW, pretty much. Got a 58 human warlock, 23 night elf hunter, 17 dwarf priest, 16 gnome mage on Sargeras (pvp) and a 40 orc shaman, 22 undead rogue, and 18 tauren druid on Perenolde (pve).
Not much has been happening other than that, really. Managed to successfully get through my first semester of Observation in a high school English class, which was cool. Also managed to scrape through with C's or better in every other class. Just have 3 semesters left to go now, woot. |

Sorry I haven't updated, like, at all in the last couple of months. Here's a very brief rundown of what's going on:
-Got WoW for my birthday, explaining my absence and complete lack of reading my friends' list -Ran Registration at AniZona again, which went well. 1200 people, and we sold out just as pre-reg stopped a couple weeks before the con. We also randomly had a flyer swap deal with ACen, so that was cool. -Trying to get through the last week of school with my GPA intact. -Celebrated mine and goddesslain's 2 year anniversary by taking her on the 40man guild raid of Disneyland. Got some nice drops there, including the [Earth Day Pin of Doom], a +15 Nature Resist trinket.
Last, but not least, my dad got fired today after 18 years of service to Southwest Airlines.
So, yeah. My life in a nutshell. How've you all been? |

If you had me alone...locked up in your house for twenty-four hours and I had to do whatever you wanted me to, what would you do with me? All posts will be permanently screened because it's a secret. Then repost this in your LJ- or don't. You might be surprised with the responses you get. |

So, yeah. I've apparently managed to survive another year on this planet without getting permanently owned by something. As always, this rather surprises me, especially since it seemed a bit closer this year than normal, heh.
But yeah, 21. Whee. Here's to another year much the same as the last. Just, you know, minus the multiple cars trying to run me over and my elbow randomly popping out.
Again, party's at 6pm tonight, call me for dire.ctions. Gotta head to observation. Lates. |

So, yeah. Pennywise concert was excellent. I almost got thrown out for being drunk :D
...Yes, you read that right.
See, I've been awake for, oh, about 42 hours straight as of this post, for some reason. Mostly because I've had a bunch of stuff to do with 1-2hr breaks in between, which isn't enough for much more than a nap. So between sets, while they're switchin crap around on stage, I decide to go sit over next to the wall to chill out. Ended up falling asleep.
I wake up about 45 minutes later at the end of the next band's set, having completely slept through a half hour of loud-ass fricking punk music, being helped to my feet by a security guy. He walks me out of the concert area, and I'm stumbling around on his arm since both of my legs are asleep for some reason and I haven't completely booted up yet. He's all, "Dude, you're so drunk you can't even stand." I'm like, "No, I'm just really freaking tired and my legs are asleep."
Yeah. Only I could be underage and allergic to alcohol, and still get almost tossed from somewhere for being drunk. It was awesome. |

Woot. I've finally joined the world of actual high-speed. Still on Cox, but it's been upgraded to about 500-700kb/s dl now. No more of that 30kb/s crap. Only problem is, my torrenting seems to be very much crippled now. Before, I was able to get 30kb/s no matter how many seeders there were. Now it fluctuates from 45kb/s down to 500 bytes/sec, generally hovering around 1-5kb/s. Any ideas?
Also, who's going with me to the Pennywise/No Use For a Name/Suicide Machines show at the Marquee 6:30 Friday night? It's just 20 bucks :D |

Well, winter break's over. Spent pretty much all of it gaming, which was fun. Speaking of which, I beat Xenosaga Ep. 1 the other day (woot for spell-nerfing the final boss so he can't attack). I should get Ep 2 soon (regardless of how much they screwed up the acting/gameplay), and I might start on Morrowind or something. I'd really like to start on another reading binge (especially since I got lots of Borders money :D), but school will likely quash most of that.

The time for Field Experience is just a dummy for the system. Basically, I need to do 72 hours of observation over 12 weeks. Once they actually tell me which high school I need to observe at, of course. 3 hours each on Monday and Friday shouldn't be that bad, right? |

Well, this is a great way to start the new year, heh. I turn off my monitor to sleep, right? Well, apparently the switch broke when I pushed it in last night, leaving my monitor stuck in the off position. So I'm now using a monitor that's at least 8-10 years old and my resolution won't go below 800x600. So I'm kinda stuck at 1024, which has resulted in three overlapping images of my screen, allowing me to type this and not much else. Looks like I need to find a new monitor :/ |

Beat E.G.G. the other day. Was a decent 20hr top-down Zelda-style RPG with nifty 3D boss battles. My brother was annoyed that I'd beaten it so fast because he wanted to use my computer to play Starcraft with friends. So he bought me Xenosaga to get me off the computer.
That game wins. 12 hours in, and maybe 60% of that was actual gameplay. I'm serious. The rest is all cutscene. There was a 45 minute cinema at one point. It's a frigging movie that you level up in. Best thing ever.
Anyway, I've now joined the rest of you in 2006, after a night of Soul Calibur 3 and Apples to Apples. Win.
My resolution for this year: Stop going to the hospital so much. If that doesn't work, just stop getting hit by cars. I mean really, it's not funny anymore. ...Ok, yes, it is. But ow.
Happy new year, peoples. Lates

This year's swag list:
-A brown bear Beanie Baby named Sherwood (the traditional stuffed animal representation of what we've acted like in the last year) -3 Dreamcast games: Elemental Gimmick Gear (E.G.G., a decent RPG so far), Rayman 2 (doesn't work because it's used and scratched), and Gundam Battle Online (doesn't work because it's the Japanese version and won't play on my system. Which is probably just as well, since all the SegaNet services closed a few years ago) -A rear light for my bike (which is nice, since both got stolen a few months ago) -A 256mb thumbdrive (my fourth) -T-shirts from What On Earth: black, "Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?"; black, "Have you seen my marbles?"; brown, "Dare to be irrelevant"; gray, "When all else fails, manipulate the data."; black, "I'm only wearing black until they make something darker." -And a "Vote for Pedro" hat, shirt, and wristband (I freaking hate that movie.)
Other than the cool shirts, it's kinda sad that my best gift was the 2-foot square crossword puzzle that took up 2 pages of Saturday's Arizona Republic.
The weekend itself was pretty nice, as my mom got the family a buzz-in trivia game like they have at restaurants and sports bars, so I spent Christmas totally destroying everyone at that :D
I also got to see goddesslain for a few hours yesterday, so Christmas was a win this year, overall. Gonna head to the Insight Bowl with thesawg later and watch the marching band and ASU (hopefully) beat Rutgers. Lates. |

Merry Christmas/Hanukkah (on Monday)/Festivus/Yule/Atheist Children Get Presents Day/Weekend, everyone :P
Not much to talk about, so this entry'll be a bit short.
Got a 2-dvd set of Three Stooges episodes, which is awesome (except that only one ep has Curly in it and the others have Shemp). Also got the traditional stuffed animal representation of what each kid has acted like the last year: a brown bear beanie baby (yay alliteration) named Sherwood.
Also figured out where I get a bit of my "mad cooking skillz" from, or at least my OFMP moments (short for "Oh Fuck, My Pizza", those times when I remember I have a pizza in the microwave 40 minutes after I put it in). My mom put on some eggs to boil for cream chipped beef on toast before we went to Mass at 9, and never turned them off. She remembers this halfway through Mass, sending my dad home to fix it.
Apparently, when eggs are left to boil for too long, they go right past "hard-boiled" and straight to "explodey". My dad had to use a mop to get them off the ceiling XD
Anyway, since it's Christmas, here are my now-traditional alternative carols. Laters.

Ok, just got a new winner in the Spammies.
I check my inbox, and there's this new mail from December 31, 1997. Normally, this would just be a "well, that's not right *delete*" moment, but I look at the subject line and see that it says "congratulations! south african 2010 lottery winner" (ALLCAPS and extraneuous exclamation points removed).
So, it's not only from the past, it's also from the future.
Answer me this: What the heck did I do to have Marty McFly send me spam?
ETA: Upon actually reading the body of the email, it appears that it's for the "South African 2010 World Cup Bid Lottery Award International program" and that I, and nine other "lucky people", have each been awarded 2 million pounds from a lump sum of 18 million.
Not only am I at a loss to explain why South Africa is paying people, me especially, money to get the World Cup in 2010, but one of those "lucky people" kinda.. isn't so much. |
